A couple of weeks ago, we ran a Q&A with Elaine Lopes, Cisco's CCIE program manager responsible for the exam development process for the CCIE team. At the end of the interview, she mentioned the CCIE Assessor Lab, a 4-hour practice lab session that students can access via the Web.

Launched in December, the CCIE Assessor Lab has so far been used by some 200 people, says Michael Reid, another CCIE program manager, and helps students become familiar with the Cisco practical exam and assess their readiness for the real thing.

The lab is currently available only for the CCIE Routing and Switching track, and Cisco says it is developing Assessor Labs for the CCIE Security and CCIE Voice tracks, though no launch dates have been set. It costs $349 per session and candidates can schedule sessions in 4-hour blocks at Cisco's Web site, 24/7.

Reid said the Assessor Lab was developed as a result of customer feedback about the CCIE lab exam, saying that they didn't have access to the tools to help them adequately prepare for the exam, and that they didn't know what to expect in the exam. (This could explain the low pass rate of 26% over the life of the CCIE program.)

Students can access the Assessor Lab remotely (though they would still need to go to a physical lab location to take the actual lab test). The Assessor Lab is based on live lab equipment and features lab management tool and configuration scenarios that simulate the format and difficulty of the actual CCIE lab exam, Cisco says.

Candidates can run an assessment engine either at the end of the test or during, which gives detailed feedback - right down to command-line corrections - and suggestions for further study of books or Web sites. There is no limit to the number of times students use the Assessor Lab (but at $300 a shot, you may have a limit) and assessor lab scores are not made a part of your permanent record in the CCIE database, says Cisco.

Reid says that among the positive responses Cisco has had from assessor lab users include folks saying it is the most useful exercise they've done in preparing for the exam.

Also, as a result of customer feedback, Cisco is working on including more scenarios to its current single-scenario Assessor Lab.
